Met Office Expands Snow and Ice Warnings Across UK as Alerts Are Brought Forward and Extended

The changes respond to snow bands pushing inland.

Overview

  • Amber warnings remain in northern and highland Scotland, where 10–20cm is possible at lower levels and up to 30–40cm on higher ground, with a risk of blizzards in stronger winds.
  • Yellow warnings now cover large parts of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and southern Scotland into Monday, and in the North East into Tuesday, with 1–3cm widely possible by Monday morning and 5–8cm in some inland or higher areas.
  • The Met Office brought forward its North West warning to noon Sunday as snow arrived in Merseyside and widened coverage to include Birmingham and more of the West Midlands.
  • Rail and road disruption continued in northern Scotland, with around 20cm on some lines, ScotRail cancellations, major LNER disruption north of Dundee, road closures and police advising against non‑essential travel in affected areas.
  • Local measures include Loganair cancelling Aberdeen and Inverness flights and school closures or late openings in Shetland, Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen, while UKHSA amber cold‑health alerts remain in force across much of England into next week.
