Messi's World Cup Jerseys Auctioned for $7.8 Million

Six jerseys worn by Lionel Messi during Argentina's winning run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup sold for $7.8 million at a Sotheby's auction, setting the record for the highest price for a sports memorabilia item this year.
The shirts were worn during each of the first halves of Argentina's games at the tournament, including the dramatic final against France, which Argentina won on penalties.
The final price fell short of the estimated $10 million, meaning a 1998 Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls jersey still holds the world record for the most expensive sports memorabilia ever sold.
A portion of the auction proceeds will be donated to the UNICAS Project, led by Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona Children's Hospital with the support of the Leo Messi Foundation, to help children suffering from rare diseases.
Despite the high price tag, the sports memorabilia market is booming, with prices continually rising, according to sports marketing expert Tim Crow.
