Merz to Read to Berlin Primary Pupils as Germany Marks Vorlesetag

This year’s edition centers on multilingual storytelling in children’s family languages.

Overview

  • The chancellor is scheduled to read at the Robert-Reinick-Grundschule in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf on Friday at 11:00.
  • The campaign, held every third Friday in November since 2004, is organized by Die Zeit, Stiftung Lesen and Deutsche Bahn Stiftung and draws participation from more than a million people, according to organizers.
  • Organizers say every child has a right to being read to because regular read-alouds benefit language, imagination and concentration.
  • The 2025 motto, “Vorlesen spricht Deine Sprache,” guides nationwide events in schools, libraries and community venues designed to reach children in their home languages.
  • Public figures are participating, including a video reading by Tagesschau presenter Susanne Daubner and a Leipzig reading by actress Sandra Hüller in support of the Buchkinder association.
