- American actress Meryl Streep and Japanese author Haruki Murakami were among the recipients of the prestigious Princess of Asturias Awards in Spain. The ceremony was held in the northern city of Oviedo and attended by the Spanish royal family.

- The Princess of Asturias Awards also recognized U.S. biologists Jeffrey Gordon, Peter Greenberg, and Bonnie Bassler for scientific and technical research, French historian Hélène Carrère d’Encausse for social sciences, and Italian author and philosopher Nuccio Ordine for communication and humanities.
- Other award recipients included Scottish charity group Mary's Meals, which won the concord award for feeding schoolchildren in poverty-stricken areas, The Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) for international cooperation, and Kenyan marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge for sports.
- Each winner of the Princess of Asturias Awards received 50,000 euros and a sculpture by renowned Spanish Catalan artist Joan Miró, with the awards formally presented by Crown Princess Leonor, after whom the prize foundation is named.
