Merthyr Tydfil Sinkhole Repair Nears Completion After £4 Million Fix

Engineers say the collapse likely stemmed from debris forcing through an aging culvert during Storm Bert.

Overview

  • Merthyr Tydfil Council puts the total bill at just over £4 million for what contractors called the biggest engineering job in south Wales this year.
  • Work remains on schedule to finish by mid-November, and Welsh Water is expected to reconnect the sewers next month.
  • Contractors built a secure metal working box and installed about 15 tonnes of hydraulic bracing, using more than 300 tonnes of concrete and 3,000 tonnes of stone.
  • Around 30 households evacuated on December 1 were able to return before Christmas after an emergency fill stabilized the site.
  • The void at Nant Morlais, Pant grew to roughly 33ft wide and more than 40ft deep, drawing national attention before the months-long repair program.
