Merrimack Seeks Answers on Report Naming Town in ICE Warehouse Plan

Town and state officials say they were not notified and are pressing for details after the Washington Post identified a local warehouse as a potential detainee processing site.

Overview

  • The Washington Post reported that a Merrimack industrial building is among 16 smaller processing sites that would each hold about 500 to 1,500 people and feed seven larger warehouse hubs to speed deportations.
  • Town Manager Paul Micali said local officials learned of the idea from media reports, and the governor’s office told him it has no knowledge of any plan.
  • ICE and the Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests for comment, while ICE’s Boston office said it is fielding inquiries triggered by the reporting.
  • Merrimack County’s administrator said the county previously considered partnering with ICE but has no agreement in place, noting the issue could resurface in 2026.
  • Democrats including Rep. Maggie Goodlander and Rep. Chris Pappas voiced opposition and sought information as some Republicans expressed support, with critics citing concerns about using warehouses that lack proper utilities, ventilation and temperature control.
