Mercedes-Benz Receives Permits for Turquoise Lights Denoting Autonomous Driving
The lights will be used in conjunction with the automaker's Drive Pilot system, available on S-class and EQS models in California and Nevada starting in 2024.
- Mercedes-Benz has become the first automaker to receive permits allowing the use of turquoise-colored lights on the outside of vehicles to denote an autonomous driving system in California and Nevada.
- The turquoise lights will illuminate when Drive Pilot, Mercedes-Benz's Level 3 advanced driving assistance system (ADAS), is engaged.
- Drive Pilot is a conditional automation system that can only be used in limited situations and in certain (geo-fenced) areas, like in heavy traffic on select highways at speeds of 40 MPH or less.
- Mercedes-Benz said numerous studies have proven that turquoise is the optimal color for automated driving, as it adheres to the SAE J3134 Recommended Practice guidelines.
- Mercedes Drive Pilot system will be available on Mercedes S-class and EQS models in Nevada and California starting in early 2024.
