Their eligibility follows a judge’s decision to reduce their life sentences in May, with any board recommendation subject to the governor’s final approval.

Overview

  • The California Board of Parole Hearings will conduct separate remote sessions for Erik on Aug. 21 and for Lyle on Aug. 22 from Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility.
  • A Los Angeles County judge reduced both sentences in May from life without parole to 50 years to life, triggering immediate eligibility for suitability review.
  • District Attorney Nathan Hochman has formally opposed the brothers’ bids for release and will present the prosecution’s case against parole at each hearing.
  • The panel will evaluate factors including their ages at the time of the 1989 killings, evidence of alleged long-term abuse and records of prison rehabilitation.
  • Any favorable decision by the parole board will be forwarded to Gov. Gavin Newsom, who can review or overturn the recommendation within 150 days.
