Their eligibility follows a May resentencing under California's youth-offender law.

Overview

  • Separate hearings will be held via videoconference from Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, with Erik on Thursday and Lyle on Friday.
  • Parole commissioners will assess whether each man poses an unreasonable risk to public safety, weighing motive, remorse, prison conduct and release plans.
  • Any grant would prompt a 120-day legal review and then a 30-day decision by Gov. Gavin Newsom, meaning any release would still take months.
  • Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman has formally opposed parole, arguing the brothers have not shown full insight or rehabilitation.
  • A 2023 habeas petition citing new evidence remains pending, and a judge has ordered prosecutors to explain why the case should not be reexamined.
