Men Jailed for Vigilante Axe Attack Over Alleged Quad Bike Theft

Recorder Robert Smith condemned the coordinated assault at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court after reviewing digital evidence that led to the convictions.

Overview

  • Lewis Tether received a four-year term and Samuel Clarke was jailed for three years and nine months after pleading guilty to wounding with intent.
  • Tether wielded an axe to strike the victim eight times across his head, back and ribs as Clarke punched and kicked him.
  • The defendants targeted their victim after Tether suspected him of stealing his £6,500 quad bike based on a Facebook post shown by the victim’s mother.
  • Prosecution relied on CCTV, Ring doorbell footage (which Clarke tried to discard) and a Facebook post by Tether to link the defendants to the attack.
  • The victim was treated for a 4–5cm head wound and now suffers ongoing psychological harm and reduced social activity following the assault.
