Overview

  • Since joining West Midlands Police in 2012, Pope has logged over 3,000 suspect identifications, surpassing his own milestones of 1,000 in 2018 and 2,000 in 2020.
  • Before each shift he reviews CCTV images, video stills and police briefings to prime his memory for faces of wanted offenders.
  • His recognitions have led to arrests for offences ranging from attempted murder and assaults to sexual attacks, including when suspects wore face masks or appeared in grainy footage.
  • Pope was among the first 20 members of the Super Recognisers Association and earned the Chief Constable’s award for averaging about 200 identifications per year.
  • As part of the Safer Travel Partnership, he travels across the West Midlands on buses and trains, averaging a suspect recognition every other shift and plans to continue indefinitely.
