Meloni Confirms March 22–23 Referendum on Judicial Career Separation

The move sets up a procedural clash over whether to wait for the citizen signature window to close.

Overview

  • Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the cabinet will set the vote at its next meeting, calling March 22–23 the most likely dates and citing the need to finalize implementing rules before the new CSM.
  • Under Article 15 of Law 352/1970, the government must issue the decree within 60 days of the Cassation’s admission and hold the referendum on a Sunday 50–70 days after the decree.
  • The citizen committee reports about 280,000 signatures with collection open until January 30 and says it will challenge an early decree before administrative courts and potentially the Constitutional Court.
  • Forza Italia has activated a nationwide Yes campaign after an operational meeting led by Antonio Tajani, with roughly fifty local events planned for late January.
  • Party figures discuss budgeting roughly €500,000–€600,000 for the push, with higher estimates floated, drawing on more than €2 million from a recent membership drive.
