Melissa and Mark Hortman to Lie in State at Minnesota Capitol

Calls for enhanced protections for public officials have intensified after the politically motivated killing of the former House speaker along with her husband.

Overview

  • On Friday, June 27, the caskets of Melissa and Mark Hortman and their golden retriever, Gilbert, will lie in state in the Minnesota Capitol rotunda from noon to 5 p.m.
  • A private funeral is scheduled for Saturday, June 28, at 10:30 a.m. with a livestream available on the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s YouTube channel.
  • Vance Luther Boelter, 57, was arrested on June 15 and now faces state and federal murder charges, including two federal counts that carry the death penalty.
  • Authorities say Boelter also wounded Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, and targeted more than 45 lawmakers in a political assassination plot.
  • Hortman’s lying in state will mark the first time a woman has received this honor in Minnesota history.
