Melbourne Metro Tunnel to Open in Early December With Soft-Launch Services

The state will phase in limited daytime trains to prove new systems before a network-wide timetable overhaul on February 1, 2026.

Overview

  • Premier Jacinta Allan confirmed an early‑December “summer start” with trains every 20 minutes between Westall and West Footscray from 10am to 3pm on weekdays.
  • Weekend services will run every 20 minutes from 10am to 7pm between Westall and West Footscray, extending to East Pakenham every 40 minutes and Sunbury every hour.
  • Full integration begins on February 1, 2026, with peak trains every three to four minutes and at least every 10 minutes from 6am to 10pm, plus about 1000 extra weekly services and Frankston Line trains returning to the City Loop.
  • All five stations are complete, with Town Hall and State Library now handed over, linking the Sunbury line to Cranbourne and Pakenham via twin nine‑kilometre tunnels and five new CBD stations.
  • Passenger services remain subject to final approval from the national rail safety regulator after extensive testing, as the project’s cost has risen beyond $15 billion from an initial $10.9 billion estimate.
