Melaka Court Sentences Singaporean to 72 Years for Murders of Wife and Stepson

The victims’ family plans to appeal the decision following calls for a death sentence.

Overview

  • Justice Anselm Charles Fernandis delivered the Aug 18 ruling in the Melaka High Court, finding Shahrul Nizam Zuraimy guilty of murdering Norfazera Bidin, 27, and her son Muhammad Iman Ashraf, 11.
  • He was ordered to serve 36 years’ imprisonment and receive 12 strokes of the cane for each count, with the terms running consecutively from his Oct 11, 2019 arrest for a total of 72 years and 24 strokes.
  • The court cited dismemberment, the hiding of both victims’ heads above a ceiling, and the disposal of other body parts in a bushy area as attempts to prevent identification.
  • Prosecutors sought the death penalty, while the defence argued for leniency by pointing to repentance and good conduct during six years of detention at Sungai Udang Prison.
  • Family members delivered impact statements urging capital punishment and say they will appeal, and the court noted he cleaned the scene before fleeing to Singapore, where he was arrested and handed to Malaysian police.
