Overview
- Principal photography has started at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios, with additional shoots planned in Matera, Ginosa, Gravina, Laterza and Altamura.
- Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen takes over as Jesus, with Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene, Kasia Smutniak as Mary, Pier Luigi Pasino as Peter and Riccardo Scamarcio as Pontius Pilate, while Rupert Everett has a small but important role.
- The sequel proceeds with an almost entirely new principal ensemble after producers opted to recast rather than use digital de-aging two decades after the original.
- Lionsgate will distribute the two-part release dated for Good Friday, March 26, 2027, and Ascension Day, May 6, 2027.
- Co-written by Gibson and Randall Wallace, the project is described by Gibson as ambitious in scope with a tone he has called “an acid trip.”
