Mel Gibson Announces Two-Part Sequel 'The Resurrection of the Christ' for Spring 2027

Lionsgate confirmed on Instagram that production will begin in Europe later this year.

Overview

  • The studio set part one for Good Friday, March 26, 2027, and part two for Ascension Day, May 6, 2027.
  • Principal photography is slated to start in Europe before the end of 2025 following earlier location scouting across the Mediterranean.
  • The project follows Gibson’s return to directing with the 2025 thriller Flight Risk and marks his first sequel to the 2004 film.
  • Screenwriter Randall Wallace co-wrote the script and Lionsgate chairman Adam Fogelson has publicly praised Gibson’s vision.
  • Gibson’s original Passion of the Christ was self-financed for about $30 million and grossed over $610 million despite controversy over its violence and alleged antisemitism.
