Mel Bridgman, Former Flyers No. 1 Pick and Senators’ First GM, Dies at 70

Overview

  • A 157-point season with the Victoria Cougars in 1974–75 propelled him to the Flyers as the first overall pick in 1975.
  • He captained Philadelphia for three seasons and later wore the C with the New Jersey Devils, helping the Flyers reach the 1980 Stanley Cup Final.
  • His NHL career spanned 977 regular-season games with 252 goals and 449 assists for 701 points, plus 67 points in 125 playoff games.
  • He played for the Flyers, Flames, Devils, Red Wings and Canucks, with a brief stint at HC Sierre in Switzerland.
  • After retiring, he became the inaugural general manager of the modern Ottawa Senators from 1991 to 1993 and was inducted into the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
