Meitei BJP MLA Makes First Post-Violence Visit to Kuki Villages and Relief Camp

Kuki organisations denounced the unannounced stop as intrusive, highlighting lingering trauma from the violence.

Overview

  • BJP MLA Yumnam Khemchand Singh visited Litan in Ukhrul and Chassad in Kamjong, becoming the first Meitei legislator to enter Kuki hill areas and a Kuki relief camp since May 2023.
  • At the Litan Sareikhong relief camp, he urged communities to restore harmony, warning that prolonged divisions risk the future of children and the state's development.
  • State BJP vice-president Hopingson Shimray accompanied the trip and called it a confidence-building step, noting Singh was the first BJP Meitei MLA to set foot in a Kuki camp.
  • The Litan camp in-charge and Kuki bodies said they were not informed of the visit and criticised it as abrupt and opportunistic, saying it caused distress to displaced residents.
  • The outreach comes as more than 250 people have been killed and over 60,000 remain displaced since 2023, with Manipur still under President's Rule and many families in relief camps.
