Meijer Recalls 38,000 Gallons of Distilled Water After FDA Finds Black Substance

Consumers in six Midwestern states are urged to stop using the affected one-gallon bottles pending completion of the FDA review.

Overview

  • The recall covers 38,043 gallons packaged in one-gallon red-cap bottles sold at Meijer stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.
  • Affected units are marked with best-by date October 4, 2026, lot code 39-222 #3, UPC 041250841197, Product ID 472859 and Item Code 477910.
  • FDA reports a black floating foreign material in certain bottles, and the agency has not yet identified its origin or composition or assigned a recall classification.
  • No illnesses or injuries have been reported, but caution is emphasized because distilled water is used in CPAP devices, infant formula preparation and nasal rinses.
  • Meijer initiated the voluntary recall in November 2025, and customers are advised to discard the product or return it for a refund and to clean any surfaces it contacted.
