Meghalaya seeks public input on draft Film Tourism Policy as it disburses filmmaker grants

Feedback on the draft policy is open until June 20 to refine incentives for Meghalaya’s emerging filmmakers

Overview

  • The policy, unveiled June 3, outlines four strategic pillars to showcase Meghalaya’s heritage, bolster its creative ecosystem, nurture emerging talent and streamline filmmaking support.
  • Public feedback is invited through June 20 via the Meghalaya One portal to shape the final Film Tourism Policy framework.
  • Under Hello Meghalaya, grants were disbursed to 47 filmmakers across four categories, funding feature films, web series and short films with awards up to Rs 35 lakh per project.
  • The policy aligns with Vision 2032’s goal of growing Meghalaya’s economy to US $16 billion by positioning the state as a Northeast film hub and offering incentives up to Rs 1.5 crore for major language productions.
  • Plans include the establishment of a state film institute, rotation of film festivals across Shillong, Tura and Jowai to expand regional engagement, and an exchange programme with the Film and Television Institute, Arunachal Pradesh, for masterclasses.
