Meghalaya Reports Rise in Japanese Encephalitis Cases, Details Vaccination Gaps and Response

Higher infant immunisation remains central to prevention, the health minister said.

Overview

  • Meghalaya logged 236 Japanese Encephalitis cases over two years, increasing from 89 in 2023–24 to 147 in 2024–25, according to an Assembly reply by Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh.
  • District figures show East Khasi Hills rose from 10 to 29 cases, West Jaintia Hills from 34 to 49, and East Jaintia Hills from 5 to 22, while Ri-Bhoi held at 25, South West Khasi Hills dipped from 5 to 4, South Garo Hills recorded its first case, and West, East and North Garo Hills reported none in both years.
  • Officials reported uneven vaccine coverage, with Garo Hills districts at 80–95% compared with 71% in East Khasi Hills and 82% in Ri-Bhoi, which they say aligns with lower case counts in Garo Hills.
  • The government outlined actions including designated surveillance labs, consideration of labs in every district, strengthened manpower with microbiologists, sponsorships to fill posts in high-incidence areas, and expanded awareness and interdepartmental efforts.
  • Separately, the Smart City Mission reported 77.81% physical progress as of July, and the 109-shop Polo commercial complex is being operationalised after an initial tender drew no bidders, with allotment now under review for floor-wise or shop-wise options.
