Meghalaya Opens Ramakrishna Mission’s First Northeast College as CM Pledges Education Reforms
The inauguration in Sohra became a platform for Conrad K Sangma to acknowledge weak outcomes despite large education outlays.
Overview
- Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the Ramakrishna Mission College at Nongthymmai, Sohra, affiliated to Capt Williamson Sangma State University and the Mission’s first in the Northeast.
- He said Meghalaya spends around Rs 3,600 crore a year, nearly 15% of its budget, yet quality and results have not kept pace.
- Citing structural gaps, he noted nearly 14,000 schools and about 55,000 teachers for 38 lakh people versus Tripura’s roughly 4,000 schools and 40,000 teachers, with about 2,400 schools showing single-digit or zero enrolment.
- The government has begun school rationalisation and plans to formalise roles for ad hoc and SSA teachers to improve management and provide job security.
- Sangma announced a mission to connect every school to electricity, and the new college will begin with Arts and Science streams to expand affordable, value-based higher education in Sohra and nearby districts.
