Meghalaya Imposes Two-Month Night Curfew Along Bangladesh Border in East Khasi Hills

Officials say porous border stretches pose infiltration, smuggling risks.

Overview

  • The order takes immediate effect from 8 pm to 6 am within one kilometre of the Zero Line and will remain in force for two months unless modified earlier.
  • Movement aimed at crossing the boundary, unlawful assemblies of five or more, carrying arms or objects usable as weapons, and smuggling of cattle, betel nut and leaves, dry fish, bidis, cigarettes, and tea leaves are prohibited during curfew hours.
  • The District Magistrate invoked Section 163 of the BNSS and issued the curfew ex-parte, citing urgent threats to public order from illegal migrants, proscribed groups, and organised crime networks.
  • Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said the administration is continuously working to curb illegal immigration, with departmental teams conducting checks in vulnerable areas such as Umling.
  • Student and civic groups including NESO, the Khasi Students’ Union, and CoMSO pressed for stricter verification and entry controls, as state leaders discuss tools like MRSSA and an Inner Line Permit in engagements with the Union Home Minister.
