Overview

  • Two districts—South Garo Hills and West Jaintia Hills—have yet to establish the mandated panels.
  • The committees operate under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules, 2001.
  • They are charged with capturing, treating, vaccinating, sterilising and rehabilitating stray dogs in designated centres.
  • The order followed a PIL by Kaustav Paul seeking systematic management of Meghalaya’s stray dog population.
  • The state government filed an affidavit confirming the formation of ABC committees in 10 districts.
