Overview

  • The state government is preparing an official notification requiring display of each driver’s name, licence number, contact information and address in all transport department–permitted commercial vehicles.
  • Operators will have one month after notification to install the identification displays before district transport officers enforce permit suspensions for noncompliance.
  • The directive applies only to vehicles holding commercial permits and excludes private cars, government-owned vehicles and those under public undertakings.
  • The policy was unveiled by Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh following a transport meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar to bolster passenger safety.
  • Officials say the measure aims to build traveler trust and deter potential criminal intent as tourism in Shillong and across Meghalaya continues to grow.
