Meghalaya CM Lays Foundation for Tura Cenotaph Reconstruction Honouring Garo Labour Corps
The project pairs restoration with a government push to recover records and formally honour the corps’ World War I service.
Overview
- The foundation stone was laid at Lower Babupara, Tura, moving the cenotaph’s reconstruction and beautification from planning to implementation.
- The ceremony drew Cabinet Minister Sanbor Shullai, PHE Minister and committee chairman Marcuise N. Marak, MLA Sanjay A. Sangma, the West Garo Hills deputy commissioner, and community representatives.
- The government pledged full support to the Committee for the Preservation of Garo Culture and Heritage to conduct systematic research in collaboration with foreign archives to recover historical records.
- Once the new structure is complete, all members of the Garo Labour Corps will receive formal honours, including those who died abroad and those who returned home.
- Officials described the approved design as simple yet dignified, with plans to use modern technology on-site to present the monument’s history to visitors.
