Meghalaya Approves Rs 700-Crore Water Project for Shillong, Says Work Is at an Advanced Stage

The push follows a 50% rainfall shortfall that left Shillong far below daily water demand.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma told the Assembly the scheme is in an advanced stage and is intended to provide long-term relief for Shillong and adjoining areas.
  • Shillong requires 5.58 crore litres of water daily but receives 4.17 crore litres, leaving a 1.40 crore-litre shortfall, including a 27.75 lakh-litre gap in Mawlai.
  • The government has set March next year as the completion target for the long-delayed Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme Phase-III.
  • The planned Wahrynthem project proposes a 33 million litres per day intake from the Umngot river at Dawki to bolster supply.
  • Officials cite measures under the 2019 water policy—spring rejuvenation, catchment protection and externally aided projects—while the opposition questions the sustainability of large schemes under changing climate conditions.
