Overview
- The University of Cambridge–led meta-analysis combined 33 studies of more than 800,000 participants to assess the effects of three healthy dietary patterns on type 2 diabetes risk.
- High adherence to the DASH diet was linked to a 23% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, compared with 21% for the AHEI and 17% for the Mediterranean diet.
- These risk reductions held consistently across African, Asian, European and Hispanic ethnic groups, indicating broad applicability.
- Due to limited data from non-European populations, researchers plan targeted studies and will expand their review to include vegetarian and vegan diets.
- The full findings are scheduled to be presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes Annual Meeting in Vienna this September.
