Medical Examiner Rules Disney World Hotel Death a Suicide

The ruling follows two other October deaths on Disney World property.

Overview

  • Orange County Medical Examiner identified the Oct. 23 victim as 28-year-old Matthew Cohn and ruled his death a suicide caused by multiple traumatic injuries after a fall at Bay Lake Tower.
  • The case is the second suicide this month linked to Disney's Contemporary Resort, after 31-year-old Summer Equitz died on Oct. 14 from multiple blunt impact injuries; officials said the monorail was not involved.
  • A separate Oct. 21 death at Disney's Fort Wilderness involved a man in his 60s who suffered a medical episode, with the sheriff's office reporting no signs of foul play.
  • Guest videos showed a large emergency response near Bay Lake Tower as staff cordoned off areas, posted privacy screens and towel carts, and told guests not to look out of windows.
  • Several outlets report that 68 people have died at Walt Disney World since 1971, and authorities remain the primary source for cause and manner of death determinations.
