MediaTek Debuts 2nm Dimensity 9600 Pro for Flagship Phones

The debut signals MediaTek's push into premium phones to enable on-device generative AI, alongside a planned move into cloud AI hardware.

Overview

  • MediaTek announced the Dimensity 9600 Pro and companion 9600M on Tuesday, Sept. 15, with the Pro built on TSMC's 2nm process and the 9600M on 3nm.
  • The company says the 9600 Pro uses a 2+3+3 All Big Core CPU that boosts single-core speed by up to 17% and cuts multi-core power draw by as much as 61% versus the prior generation.
  • MediaTek describes a dual‑NPU Agentic AI architecture that it says can run generative models up to 30 billion parameters on-device and that boosts LLM prefill and token‑per‑watt efficiency, but these gains are company‑reported lab or partner benchmarks.
  • The chip adds a Mali G2‑Ultra NX GPU with enhanced ray tracing, the Imagiq 1290 ISP for 4K240 slow motion, and support for LPDDR6 and UFS 5.0, features aimed at gaming, imaging and multitasking.
  • OPPO has confirmed the Find X10 Pro Max will ship internationally with the 9600 Pro and other OEMs such as Vivo and Xiaomi are expected to follow soon, a rollout that comes after MediaTek’s recent $3.9 billion convertible bond raise and its stated plan to ship a cloud AI accelerator in Q4 2026 but may face 2nm yield and cost trade‑offs affecting availability and price.
