MEA Confirms Modi’s Nov. 11–12 Bhutan Visit to Inaugurate 1,020 MW Hydropower Project

The trip underscores India’s role in Bhutan’s power and rail buildout.

  • India’s External Affairs Ministry said the state visit will include meetings with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.
  • Modi and Bhutan’s leadership will inaugurate the Punatsangchhu-II hydropower project, which has been operational since early 2025 and is slated to lift Bhutan’s clean-power exports to India.
  • The programme includes a review of two cross-border rail links—the KokrajharGelephu line budgeted at Rs 3,456 crore with a four-year build and the Banarhat–Samtse line at Rs 577 crore targeted for three years.
  • The visit will coincide with celebrations for the 70th birth anniversary of former King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, with the PM also set to pay respects to the Sacred Piprahwa Relics and join a Global Peace Prayer Festival in Thimphu.
  • India remains Bhutan’s largest development partner, with a Rs 10,000 crore commitment under Bhutan’s 13th Five-Year Plan supporting infrastructure and community projects.
