MDOT Shifts Westbound I-696 Onto Rebuilt Eastbound Lanes as Multi-Year Rebuild Advances

Several westbound ramps are now closed through late 2026, narrowing access to a handful of major exits.

Overview

  • At 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17, MDOT moved all westbound traffic between I-75 and Telegraph onto the newly rebuilt eastbound lanes to launch the next phase.
  • Entrance and exit ramps at Couzens, Bermuda/Hilton, Coolidge, Greenfield, and Evergreen are closed through late 2026 with signed detours in place.
  • Access remains available at I-75, Woodward Avenue, Southfield Road, Telegraph Road/M-10 (Lodge), and Lahser Road during this stage.
  • MDOT urges drivers to plan alternate routes and allow extra time, and Michigan State Police advise slowing down and paying attention to reduce preventable crashes.
  • The shift is affecting roughly 100,000 Oakland County drivers, with early backups reported near Ryan Road, and additional drainage and bridge work is planned in 2027 between I-75 and Dequindre.
