McLaren Automotive Names Giorgio Sanna Head of Motorsport
The hire follows an ownership shift to Abu Dhabi’s CYVN, signaling renewed focus on customer GT racing.
Overview
- Sanna will oversee GT3, GT4 and the one-make McLaren Trophy programmes, covering the 720S GT3 EVO, Artura GT4 and the Artura-based series.
- He will report to Jonathan Simms, director of McLaren Special Operations & Motorsport.
- The appointment fills the role vacated by Ian James, who moved to become Jaguar’s Formula E team principal after McLaren withdrew from the series.
- Sanna previously led Lamborghini’s Squadra Corse from 2015 to 2024, steering Huracan GT3 and Super Trofeo efforts and helping architect the SC63 LMDh project, which is reported to be on hold.
- McLaren Automotive’s ownership by CYVN Holdings, which also holds a minority stake in McLaren Racing, provides the backdrop for expanding customer-focused GT activities.
