McIntosh and Ledecky Lead Field as World Aquatics Championships Open in Singapore

More than 2,500 competitors from 210 countries will contest six aquatic disciplines in a new temporary pool at the Singapore Sports Hub when heats begin July 27.

Overview

  • Over 2,500 athletes from 210 national federations will compete in swimming, diving, artistic swimming, water polo, open-water swimming and high diving across Singapore from July 27 to August 3.
  • A temporary pool constructed at the Singapore Sports Hub will host all swimming and artistic swimming events, with heats in daytime sessions and finals at 7 p.m. local time.
  • Summer McIntosh enters five individual events after breaking world records in the 400m freestyle and both individual medleys at Canadian trials, aiming to match Michael Phelps’s single-meet gold record.
  • Katie Ledecky, a nine-time Olympic gold medallist and 21-time world champion, is entered in the 400m and 800m freestyle to defend her distance titles and face McIntosh in their headline duel.
  • Leon Marchand will concentrate on the 200m and 400m individual medleys following recovery from a shoulder dislocation and fractured rib, while four-time Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus remains on a 12-month break.
