New flavor combines nostalgic candy pieces and syrup with vanilla soft serve, honoring grandmothers.

McDonald's is set to launch a new McFlurry flavor inspired by grandmothers, aiming to evoke nostalgic memories of childhood treats. The "Grandma McFlurry," which will be available for a limited time starting May 21, combines vanilla soft serve with a sweet syrup and crunchy candy pieces reminiscent of the hard candies often found in a grandmother's purse.

The fast-food giant announced the new flavor as a tribute to grandmothers, who have become influential figures in contemporary culture, inspiring trends in fashion, decor, and now, food. Tariq Hassan, McDonald's Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer, emphasized the sentimental value of the new treat, stating, "The Grandma McFlurry tastes like a trip down memory lane, and we're excited to give our fans that experience while honoring the grandma-figure in all our lives."

In a unique promotional effort, McDonald's will offer free samples of the Grandma McFlurry in New York City ahead of its official release. On May 17, an ice cream truck dubbed "Grandma’s McFlurry Mobile" will be stationed at Herald Square, providing free tastings from 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The following day, the truck will visit senior centers and assisted living homes in East Harlem and Flushing, further emphasizing the connection between the new flavor and cherished family memories.

The creation of the Grandma McFlurry was spearheaded by a member of McDonald's culinary team who is a grandmother herself. Marcelo Fajnerman, Vice President of Menu Strategy, highlighted her dedication to crafting a treat that would resonate with customers on a personal level. "She was relentless in perfecting a deliciously craveable treat meant to evoke special memories with grandma or the grandma-figure in your life, drawing from her own experiences," Fajnerman said.

To celebrate the launch, McDonald's has partnered with artists Remi Wolf and Jay Wheeler to release covers of classic songs. Wolf will perform "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)," while Wheeler will offer a new rendition of "Piel Canela." These songs will be available on all music platforms starting May 21, adding an auditory layer to the nostalgic experience.

In addition to the new flavor and musical collaborations, McDonald's is making a charitable contribution to Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly, a national organization dedicated to supporting older adults experiencing isolation and loneliness. This initiative aligns with the company's broader goal of fostering connections between generations.

The Grandma McFlurry is the latest in a series of limited-time offerings from McDonald's, which has a history of introducing new flavors to its McFlurry lineup since the dessert's debut in 1997. Previous flavors have included Oreo, Heath, Nestle Crunch, M&M’s, and Butterfinger, among others. The new flavor aims to capitalize on the current "grandmacore" trend popular among younger generations, which celebrates the cozy and comforting aspects of grandmotherly life.

As McDonald's navigates a challenging economic landscape marked by inflation and changing consumer habits, the introduction of the Grandma McFlurry represents a strategic move to attract customers with a blend of nostalgia and novelty. The company hopes that this new offering will resonate with a wide audience, from those seeking a taste of childhood memories to younger consumers drawn to the cultural cachet of all things grandma-inspired.

The Grandma McFlurry will be available at McDonald's locations nationwide starting May 21, but only while supplies last. This limited-time offering underscores the company's ongoing efforts to innovate and connect with its diverse customer base through creative and culturally relevant products.
