McDonald's Bottles 'Pickle Boost' for Chicago Marathon

The giveaway aims to test a popular cramp remedy by handing out free bottles at select McDonald’s locations on race day.

Overview

  • McDonald’s announced the limited-edition bottled pickle brine called Pickle Boost and ran a Lakefront Trail preview on Friday, Oct. 9, before planned race-day distribution at five Chicago restaurants on Sunday, Oct. 11.
  • On race day the company will offer complementary bottles at 2635 N Clark St, 1563 N Wells St, 600 N Clark St, 203 N LaSalle St and 207 E 35th St with a two-bottle limit per person while supplies last.
  • PR Newswire issued a correction on Oct. 8 updating the pick-up map photo in McDonald’s original release to clarify where participants should collect the free bottles.
  • Nutrition experts quoted in coverage say scientific evidence on pickle brine easing muscle cramps is mixed and that the brine should not replace a runner’s hydration and fueling plan.
  • The stunt draws on a long-standing athlete practice of using salty, vinegar-based brine for cramps and could serve as a marketing test for similar activations if the giveaway generates strong public interest.
