Overview
- The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has submitted a proposal to double hourly fees at about 400 surface parking lots as a GRAP II measure to discourage private vehicle use during worsening air quality.
- The proposal is under review in the MCD law department and officials said it is expected to receive clearance within a day or two before any rates are changed.
- The MCD, which said the hike is likely to take effect on Wednesday, currently charges ₹20 per hour for cars and ₹10 per hour for two-wheelers at surface lots.
- Officials warn that existing contracts with private parking operators do not assign extra revenue from a rate rise to the MCD and could allow contractors to claim compensation if vehicle volumes fall because of restrictions.
- NDMC has already doubled parking fees from November 1, past MCD attempts to raise rates have been blocked by the elected civic house, and the corporation lacks consolidated vehicle-registration data to target or measure the policy’s impact.
