Overview

  • The MCC amended Law 19.5.2 on June 14 to prohibit fielders from making multiple airborne touches beyond the boundary.
  • Under the revised rule, a fielder jumping from outside the rope may touch the ball only once while airborne and must land back inside the field of play.
  • Relay catches now require all fielders involved to complete the catch from inside the boundary or the effort will be ruled a boundary.
  • The ICC will apply the new provision during the Sri Lanka-Bangladesh Test in Galle from June 17, with the MCC incorporating it into its Laws in October 2026.
  • The change responds to concerns over controversial efforts like Michael Neser’s BBL grab and aims to ensure fairness in boundary fielding.
