MCA Asks BCCI to Give Wankhede More International Matches

The Mumbai body raised the demand to protect the stadium’s hosting role while urging a national Under-17 girls tournament to strengthen the women’s talent pipeline.

Overview

  • The Mumbai Cricket Association formally put the request to the BCCI at the Board’s 95th AGM on September 18–19, 2026 when secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar submitted a written appeal.
  • MCA asked the BCCI to allot a greater number of international matches to Wankhede, stressing the ground’s status as a permanent Test centre and its long history of staging marquee fixtures.
  • Wankhede currently has only one international match confirmed for the 2026–27 home season, the third ODI between India and Zimbabwe on January 9, 2027.
  • The association also asked to be informed in advance whenever matches are awarded to venues within its jurisdiction and invited state bodies to visit the MCA Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum.
  • The appeal followed recent awards of the 2027 Women’s Premier League and inaugural ICC Women’s T20 Champions Trophy matches to nearby Brabourne Stadium, a shift that could influence Mumbai venue allocations and the development pathway for young women cricketers.
