Overview
- The MBTA suspended Orange Line service between Oak Grove and Back Bay for 11 days, running Aug. 20 to Aug. 30, and is operating free shuttle buses, fare‑free Commuter Rail between Oak Grove and North Station, and increased Green Line trains as replacements.
- Riders should expect much longer trips because shuttle routes are slower than trains and the agency says a trip from Oak Grove to Downtown Crossing can take about 70 minutes longer than normal.
- On the first day of the closure a shuttle driver routed passengers to Stoneham instead of North Station, the MBTA said the riders were later brought to North Station, the driver was removed from the service, and the vendor was notified.
- The agency says full‑line, multi‑day shutdowns let crews do concentrated track, signal and station work more efficiently than piecemeal repairs, and the Orange Line outage is part of a broader schedule of multi‑day and weekend closures planned in September.
- The concentrated closures will test the MBTA’s contractor oversight and logistics during peak disruption and could affect daily commutes across multiple lines while the authority completes projects such as the Ruggles Station work and other September suspensions.
