MBTA Extends Weekend Blue Line Suspension to Orient Heights for Cold-Weather Safety Work

The T says the change enables tunnel inspections to ensure safe switch operations before a dangerous cold snap with heavy snow.

Overview

  • The suspension runs Jan. 24–25 between Bowdoin and Orient Heights, expanded from the original Bowdoin–Airport plan due to frigid weather forecasts.
  • Free shuttle buses will serve Orient Heights, Wood Island, Airport, Maverick, and Haymarket, and riders should budget significant extra travel time, with some trips adding 30–40 minutes.
  • There will be no direct shuttle service to Bowdoin, Government Center, State, or Aquarium, with accessible van service available on request via MBTA personnel or station call boxes.
  • The East Boston Ferry will be free, operating Saturday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Fares will be free with gates open at Airport, Wood Island, Orient Heights, Suffolk Downs, Beachmont, Revere Beach, and Wonderland, with schedules and updates at mbta.com/BlueLine.
