MBTA Delays Persist as Winter Strains Aging Fleet and Signals

A federal parts hold now threatens Red Line car deliveries, limiting relief for an aging fleet.

Overview

  • The MBTA reported 10 to 25 minute delays Friday on the Green, Red, and Blue lines, with the Green Line D Branch slowed by a switch problem and a disabled train and some riders reporting waits near an hour.
  • Commuter rail canceled trips Friday on the Framingham, Fairmount, Foxboro, Haverhill, and Providence lines due to equipment shortages and mechanical or switch issues.
  • MBTA officials say the oldest Red Line cars struggled in single-digit temperatures and snow, and they described Red Line service as stable since Thursday but under continuous monitoring.
  • Only 60 of 252 new Red Line cars have been delivered, and CRRC says it plans to furlough 161 Springfield workers this spring unless a federal hold on Chinese parts is lifted, potentially affecting future deliveries.
  • To reduce headways, the MBTA is deploying some four-car Red Line trains and warns that removing all of the oldest cars would push waits to 45 minutes or more.
