Mazda Seals Iwakuni Battery Pack Plant Agreement With 2027 Start

The project establishes a domestic base using Panasonic Energy cells to support Mazda’s electrification strategy.

  • Mazda signed with Iwakuni City and Yamaguchi Prefecture to build the Mazda Motor Corporation Iwakuni Plant for cylindrical lithium-ion battery module packs.
  • Construction is scheduled to begin in November 2025, with operations planned for fiscal year 2027.
  • The facility is planned for up to 10 GWh of annual capacity to supply future electrified vehicles.
  • Panasonic Energy will supply the cylindrical cells that the plant assembles into packs.
  • The site at 3915 Minamishirazaki, Tsuzu covers about 190,000 square meters and marks Mazda’s first new domestic plant since 1992.
