Mayors’ School Breakfasts Highlight Healthy Starts as Municipalities Back Teaching Push

The annual events use shared meals to show pupils how breakfast supports learning.

  • On 9 October in Arnhem, Mayor Ahmed Marcouch hosted group 7 pupils at city hall and called a healthy breakfast a small ritual of care, attention and togetherness.
  • Dairy from Boerderij IJsseloord farmer Bart Lubbers and bread from baker Marcel van Silfhout introduced Arnhem pupils to local producers.
  • Today in Tynaarlo, IKC Oelebred pupils were welcomed at the town hall by alderman Hans Kuipers wearing the mayoral chain and guiding the children to a healthy buffet.
  • Children described eating wholegrain rolls, cucumber, yoghurt and muesli as officials stressed breakfast as fuel for concentration and a calm start to the day.
  • Dutch municipalities pooled €20,000 for new classroom materials on healthy breakfasts, while partners of the Nationaal Schoolontbijt supplied this year’s breakfast packages.
