Maxi Kleber Diagnosed With Minor Quad Injury, Will Miss Lakers’ Preseason Opener

The veteran’s MRI returned a minor finding, prompting Los Angeles to hold him out briefly.

Overview

  • JJ Redick said Kleber tweaked his quad during conditioning, underwent an MRI, and is expected to be out a few days.
  • Kleber will sit Friday’s preseason opener against the Suns as the Lakers manage his return cautiously.
  • LeBron James (glute nerve irritation), Marcus Smart (Achilles tendinopathy) and Adou Thiero (knee) are also ruled out for the opener, Redick confirmed.
  • With Kleber sidelined, frontcourt practice and preseason reps shift to Deandre Ayton, Jaxson Hayes and Christian Koloko.
  • Kleber missed nearly all of last season with a right foot fracture but said at Media Day he felt fully healthy as he targeted a floor-spacing role.
