Max Digital ID Adds Driver’s License Sign-Up for Age Checks as Kherson Region Makes System Mandatory for Alcohol Sales

VK says users can create an ID in minutes through Gosuslugi using a license, easing adoption in stores moving to QR-based verification.

Overview

  • VK’s Vladimir Kirienko announced that Russians can now create a Max digital ID via their driver’s license on Gosuslugi, with the simplified ID usable only for age verification.
  • Users now have three enrollment options for Max’s ID: confirmed biometrics, a new-format international passport, or a driver’s license.
  • Kherson Region updated licensing rules to require Max-powered age checks for alcohol retailers, with on-site inspections started on October 7 and a compliance grace period until November 28 for existing licensees.
  • At self-checkout, customers scan the restricted item, choose Max verification on-screen, and present a dynamic QR code from the app, removing the need for staff confirmation.
  • The pilot launched on September 15 with Magnit, Pyaterochka, Perekrestok, and Vkusvill, and age checks are already live in multiple regions, including five Vkusvill stores in Moscow.
