- The incident occurred at a restaurant where Maïwenn allegedly grabbed Plenel by the hair and spit in his face.
- Maïwenn was in Cannes to promote her film Jeanne du Barry, which starred herself and Johnny Depp.
- Maïwenn did not deny the spitting allegations and stated she felt a 'moral rape' after Mediapart, where Plenel is editor-in-chief, published her testimony about her relationship with ex-husband Luc Besson.
- Maïwenn was also ordered to pay $1 in moral damages to Plenel and $1,632 in moral damages to Mediapart.
