Maïwenn Fined for Assaulting French Journalist at Cannes Film Festival

The director did not deny the allegations and cited 'moral rape' after her testimony about ex-husband Luc Besson was published.

  • French actress and filmmaker Maïwenn has been fined $435 for spitting on French journalist Edwy Plenel during last year's Cannes Film Festival.
  • The incident occurred at a restaurant where Maïwenn allegedly grabbed Plenel by the hair and spit in his face.
  • Maïwenn was in Cannes to promote her film Jeanne du Barry, which starred herself and Johnny Depp.
  • Maïwenn did not deny the spitting allegations and stated she felt a 'moral rape' after Mediapart, where Plenel is editor-in-chief, published her testimony about her relationship with ex-husband Luc Besson.
  • Maïwenn was also ordered to pay $1 in moral damages to Plenel and $1,632 in moral damages to Mediapart.
