Mavericks' Daniel Gafford Sprains Ankle, Out 2–3 Weeks

The sprain is expected to cost him the rest of camp, leaving his Oct. 22 opener status uncertain.

Overview

  • Head coach Jason Kidd said Gafford rolled his ankle during the first training camp practice in Vancouver and will be sidelined two to three weeks.
  • He will miss the remainder of training camp and the preseason, putting his availability for the season opener against the Spurs in doubt.
  • Dallas must cover frontcourt minutes with Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively II, with rookie Cooper Flagg and P.J. Washington in the mix, though Washington missed Wednesday’s practice with a head injury and could return later this week.
  • With Kyrie Irving still rehabbing a torn ACL, the Mavericks plan to open with D’Angelo Russell as lead guard and Klay Thompson providing wing spacing.
  • Gafford, 27, is coming off a career year and signed a three-year, $54 million extension in June after missing time late last season with an MCL sprain.
