Matthias Lilienthal Named New Intendant of Berlin’s Volksbühne

The experienced theater leader will assume the role in 2026, supported by an Artistic Board focused on dance and innovation.

Matthias Lilienthal, a seasoned theater professional, will take over as intendant of the Berliner Volksbühne starting in the 2026/2027 season.
Lilienthal previously served as Chefdramaturg and deputy intendant at the Volksbühne during its celebrated Castorf era in the 1990s.
He will be supported by an Artistic Board comprising performance artist Florentina Holzinger and choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas, who will emphasize dance in the theater's programming.
The appointment follows a turbulent period for the Volksbühne, including financial challenges and the unexpected death of previous intendant René Pollesch in 2024.
Lilienthal aims to blend tradition and innovation, with plans to address themes like East-West relations and expand the theater's reach into the city.
